Oracle Adds Three Mobile Apps to PeopleSoft

Oracle Adds Three Mobile Apps to PeopleSoft

The PeopleSoft mobile-app announcement was made during Oracle's customer conference, OpenWorld 2012, taking place in San Francisco through Thursday. Mobile, cloud-based apps were one of OpenWorld's big themes, led by the new PeopleSoft apps. PeopleSoft, acquired by Oracle eight years ago, is a human resources package of applications.

Oracle has announced three new mobile apps for its PeopleSoft product. The apps, for mobile expenses, mobile approvals, and company directory, are HTML5/CSS 3 based and do not require downloads.

The People Mobile Expenses app allows employees to log expenses on a smart phone, laptop or tablet while traveling or in the office, and then make updates and submit the report for approval. The app supports the expenses process from either the employee's or manager's role.

'Larger Trend'

Mobile Approvals is designed to save time by streamlining the review and approval process for requisitions, purchase orders, expenses, vouchers, and general ledger journals. The Company Directory app allows users to locate, connect and collaborate with employees.

The new mobile apps, designed for any devices that support HTML5, allow the user to switch between the mobile app and the full PeopleSoft application, and they support gestural inputs such as swiping.

The apps are included at no extra cost with the current PeopleSoft 9.1 release, and, as long as the user's company has the corresponding PeopleSoft product, require no additional software or middleware.

PeopleSoft is a human resources package of applications. It includes Human Capital Management, Financial Management, Supplier Relationship Management, Enterprise Services Automation, Supply Chain Management, and a development toolset.

Charles King, an analyst with industry research firm Pund-IT, said that "Oracle's move is indicative of a larger trend across the entire business application and business process space." He noted that "the walls of the traditional office are breaking down," and employees need to "have access to their apps wherever they are."

Now, Everyone Is Mobile

In the past, King told us, "mobile apps tended to focus on the most mobile workers' needs, such as tech support or sales," but now it includes everyone.

The announcement was made during Oracle's customer conference, OpenWorld 2012, taking place in San Francisco through Thursday. Mobile, cloud-based apps were one of the conference's big themes, led by the new PeopleSoft mobile apps.

Executives at cloud-based customer-service provider RightNow and cloud-based talent management provider Taleo, two companies now owned by Oracle, said they expected to begin integrating mobile apps into their services, beginning with iPad apps for managers.

OpenWorld will also include presentations by more than two dozen Oracle customers sharing their successes using PeopleSoft, as well as descriptions about the PeopleSoft roadmap, the next PeopleSoft update, and new planned solutions to streamline PeopleSoft lifecycle management and maintenance.

Even as Oracle continues its march forward with PeopleSoft, which it acquired eight years ago, the founder and former CEO of PeopleSoft is going public with his new venture. Called Workday, the company has core features centered around personnel department management, like PeopleSoft. Workday is designed to make its data center-based software available to any device via the cloud.
